Wednesday (Mar. 8), marked International Women’s Day, and all around the globe, women, men, and children showed their love and appreciation for the strong sheroes who contributed to all aspects of work and life in general. In honor of the glorious day, social platforms Global Citizen and Chime For Change penned an open letter advocating for gender equality, which garnered signatures from A-list celebrities including Beyonce, John Legend, and Madonna.
“We have reached a critical moment in history. Recent legislation and rhetoric have put decades of progress for girls and women at risk,” the letter reads. “All over the world, women are on the front lines fighting for our future. Yet millions of girls and women are still denied basic equal rights.” The letter also comments on certain policies recently put in place by the Trump administration that “jeopardize” women’s rights.
Ultimately, Global Citizen issued a call to action for everyone to get involved in the ongoing fight for gender equality. “We stand together to say, in a voice louder than ever, that fighting for gender equality is the emergency and the opportunity of our time,” it continues. “Our story is far from over… This is about hearing a call – to join us wherever you are. About raising an alarm – drawing attention where there is work to be done. And about celebrating – those who are already showing us, against impossible odds, what is possible.”
Jada Pinkett-Smith, Salma Hayek and Julia Roberts were among the 30 signatures under the Global Citizen letter. Read the full statement and find out how to get involved here.
