A pair of California nuns embezzled half a million dollars from Catholic school parents to pay for lavish vacations.
According to reports, Sister Mary Margaret Kreuper and Sister Lana Chang stole money intended as tuition payments for nearly 10 years. They were able to maintain the ruse by telling parents the budget was tight.
Kreuper, who retired as principal in 2018, reportedly withheld a few checks and deposited into a separate account. Investigators learned the nuns gave some of the money back to the school but kept a majority of it for themselves, even going to Casinos to gamble.
The scandal was brought to everyone’s attention last week during an assembly at the K-8 school when attendees were notified Sister Keruper and Sister Chang was “involved in the personal use of a substantial amount of school funds.”
Michael Meyers, the school’s spokesman, said an investigation was launched six months prior when the school conducted a standard audit. At the same time, Meyers says a parent asked for a copy of a check made out to the school and noticed it wasn’t deposited in the school’s bank account.
However, the nuns had expressed remorse and the archdiocese and the church said it would not pursue criminal charges.
