The Huffington Post reports Zarriel Trotter, 13, was shot Friday evening (Mar. 24,) just a half-mile from his home and school. Trotter, who was not the intended target, was hit by a stray bullet following a fight with two groups nearby. No arrests have been made in the shooting.
Trotter, along with a few other classmates from Catalyst Circle Rock Charter School, appeared in a PSA for Black Is Human titled, “Our Black Boys-Real Talk” in February 2015. “I don’t want to live around in my community where I got to keep on hearing and hearing people keep on getting shot, people keep on getting killed,” he said in the award-winning PSA.
The group sent well wishes to the teen’s family following the incident. Zarriel underwent surgery on Saturday at Mount Sinai Hospital after it was reported the bullet had just missed his spine. The teen is Austin’s 71st shooting victim and the youngest this year, The Chicago Sun-Times reports. A 12-year-old was one of the teen’s wounded in a shooting earlier this year by Trotter’s school.
