Coca-Cola is reportedly in talks of creating a new formula for a series of wellness drinks, and the brand’s special ingredient is weed. Coca-Cola is partnering with Canada-based pot farmer Aurora Cannabis to produce drinks infused with marijuana, Bloomberg reports.
The company has not confirmed reports of the joint venture, but said in a statement on Monday (Sept. 17) that it is “closely watching the growth of non-psychoactive CBD as an ingredient in functional wellness beverages.”
CBD is a component of marijuana that is believed to reduce pain, inflammation, and treat mental issues such as anxiety, depression, and insomnia. THC, on the other hand, is the component of weed that gets people high. Both CBD and THC are still illegal in the Unites Stated under federal law. Even so, CBD is not strictly enforced. Various CBD products are sold on major distribution and retail sites, including Amazon.
Coke is reportedly looking into health benefits in hopes of creating “health-focused beverages that will ease inflammation, pain, and cramping.”
“The space is evolving quickly. No decisions have been made at this time,” the soda company said.
If Coca-Cola and Aurora officially form a partnership, it will mark the first venture into weed-infused drinks created by a major non-alcoholic beverage distributor and cannabis company.
