Colorado began the sale of legal recreational marijuana today (Jan. 1), Reuters reports, allowing “three dozen former medical marijuana dispensaries newly cleared state regulators to sell pot to consumers…”
Recreational use of the leafy drug also permitted the cultivation, consumption, and possession legally in Colorado for over a year now, but the selling of marijuana started off the state’s residents’ 2014 on a “high” note.
An assembly-line worker, Jesse Phillips, said, “I wanted to be one of the first to buy pot and no longer be prosecuted for it. This end of prohibition is long overdue.”
Ezekiel Edwards, director of the American Civil Liberties Union’s Criminal Law Reform Project, also said the legalization of cannabis will “stop the needless and racially biased enforcement of marijuana prohibition laws.”
