Deston Garrett’s mother wants everyone to know the reason behind her son’s death: an argument, between friends, over a YouTube music video, the Los Angeles Times reports.
Garrett was a 19-year-old high school football player before he was murdered in cold blood on the evening of June 9. He was showing his friend Fredrick Marshall, 23, all the views he had racked up on a YouTube music video he had made at his family’s Sacramento home when an argument ensued. Deston asked Fredrick to leave the residence and that’s when Marshall allegedly shot Garrett and fled the scene. Garrett was rushed to the hospital with a gunshot wound to his torso, however he died two days later.
Marshall was known to frequently visit the Garrett family home, according to Deston’s parents Tanya and Jay. “You come in and destroy my home like that,” Tanya told news station FOX40. “After I fed you, and I’ve clothed you—I mean, we just went camping a few weeks ago.”
Garrett attended Sacramento Charter High School until January. He was attending Sacramento City Unified School District’s Accelerated Academy and was set to graduate around the time of his death. He had his sights set on the NFL. Garrett loved football and was described by classmates as “a vibrant young man.”
On the day of his funeral, Garrett’s loved ones got some relief when Marshall got booked on a suspicion of voluntary manslaughter charge. He is currently being held on $100,000 bail at the Sacramento County Jail where he awaits arraignment June 27.
