Three people are reportedly dead and at least 11 others are injured after a gunman opened fire at a game tournament at a waterfront mall in Jacksonville, Florida on Sunday (Aug. 26), CBS News reports.
The tournament was reportedly being held for “Madden NFL 19” at the GLHF Gamer Bar. There were reportedly 150 people involved in the two-day event, including both spectators and players. Players were competing for a chance to play in the final round, which was supposed to take place in Las Vegas.
A graphic video was taken at the time of the shooting which captured gunshots firing out and screams from bystanders. Two bystanders were killed in the chaos. Nine others were wounded from the gunfire, while two others were injured as they fled the scene, Jacksonville Sheriff Mike Williams said. They are all in stable condition.
The shooter has reportedly been identified as David Katz of Baltimore, Maryland. Authorities stated that Katz used a single handgun to carry out the attack. He reportedly died from a self-inflicted gun wound, Williams confirmed.
It is unclear what led Katz to fire his weapon at this time. Sheriff Williams said investigators are reviewing surveillance footage as they continue to look into the incident. The FBI is also assisting with the investigation. Authorities have reportedly impounded Katz’s vehicle and the FBI executed a search of Katz’s family home in Maryland.
EA Sports – the company who developed and published “Madden NFL 19” – said it is aware of the shooting and working with authorities on the matter. “This is a horrible situation, and our deepest sympathies go out to all involved,” the company said. “Our focus right now is on those affected, and supporting law enforcement as they continue their investigation into this crime.”
The NFL also issued a statement saying it was “shocked and deeply saddened by the horrific tragedy.” “We support our partners at EA Sports and will continue to monitor developments with local law enforcement.”
