Chicago police arrested 37-year-old Joshua Smith on Wednesday (April 12) and charged him with first-degree murder in connection with the death of Cook County Judge Raymond Myles.
According to reports, home surveillance played a vital role in capturing Smith. From the footage, police were able to see the vehicle used and the license plate number. Police say they don’t believe Smith acted alone and from the evidence Myles and a 52-year-old woman who was shot but is still alive, were targeted. Chief of Detectives Melissa Staples will not say if she thinks Smith was the gunman
The 66-year-old judge presided over several prominent cases throughout his career including the case against William Balfour, the convicted killer of Jennifer Hudson’s mother, brother and 7-year-old nephew.
According to police, the woman who has not been identified was walking out out of Myles’ house at about 5AM when she encountered the gunman. Hearing the commotion, Myles went outside and was shot multiple times and killed.
Staples said the couple were known to leave the house at 5AM. A CNN affiliate said as of Wednesday the woman is in stable condition.
