Louisiana mother Schaquana Spears, 30, is being reprimanded for disciplining and instilling good values in her children.
Spears was arrested earlier this week on child cruelty charges after she whooped her three sons for breaking into a local home. Her 13 year-old son reported to detectives that she beat him with an RCA cord. He had marks on his body, arms and chest. Her two other children, ages 10 and 12 also had injuries, according to investigators.
Initially, a neighbor reported a couple of missing items, and informed Spears. The boys had stolen socks, electronics and a hover board. Immediately after spotting her kids with the stolen goods, she proceeded to beat them.
Spears luckily posted bail on Tuesday night (June 21). Still, she later went on to explain that she was indeed astonished that she would be punished for what in her eyes, as a parent, was the right thing to do.
“It’s been hell. I never could imagine trying to be a good mother would end me up in jail with a criminal record,” Spears told WBRZ. “They’re just being kids, being followers, I thought I was showing them this is not what you do. You do not steal people’s stuff, what they work hard for. I know how that feels, I’ve had my house broken into.”
District Attorney Hillar Moore recently released a statement, which defended a parent’s right to discipline their children—especially if it’s in efforts to protect them from harms way.
“We need more parents who discipline their children,” Moore notes.“Surely you would expect a parent to discipline a child who is burglarizing other people’s homes as this could be a deadly encounter for the child.”
“I will review all of the reports; meet with the DCFS office and review any history of this mother and her children to get a better picture of the entire family dynamics before making a decision,” Moore continued “In the meantime my office is working with the juvenile court to ensure the speedy release of the mother under conditions satisfactory to the court.”
Still, Moore went on to explain that the law does not allow “excessive pain or cruelty.”
