
Former four-time mayor of Washington, D.C. Marion Barry died Sunday morning (Nov. 23). Currently serving on the D.C. Council, Barry was a well-known political figure and civil rights activist. He passed away at the United Medical Center after a brief stay in Howard University Hospital. No cause of death has been given.
A statement was released by Barry’s family to the Washington Post.
“Mr. Barry transitioned at approximately 12 midnight on November 23, 2014, at the United Medical Center, after having been released from Howard University Hospital on Saturday, November 22, 2014,” it read.
President Obama also released a statement on Barry’s death.
“Through a storied, at times tumultuous life and career, he earned the love and respect of countless Washingtonians, and Michelle and I extend our deepest sympathies to Marion’s family, friends and constituents today,” he said.
