In her recent interview with Elle magazine, Michelle Obama speaks candidly with Oprah Winfrey about details in her forthcoming book, Becoming.
The former First Lady discusses growing up on Chicago’s South Side, having learned the importance of achievement early on and meeting Barack Obama. Mrs. Obama says she remembers one-night laying in bed with the future president and he was staring up at the ceiling pensively.
“He looked vaguely troubled, as if he were pondering something deeply personal. Was it our relationship? The loss of his father? ‘Hey, what are you thinking about over there?’ I whispered. He turned to look at me, his smile a little sheepish. ‘Oh,’ he said, ‘I was just thinking about income inequality.’ ”
Life in the White House was an adjustment for Michelle Obama, who in an effort to bring some normality to their public lives instituted family dinners in the East Wing. “The West Wing had enough going on; we wanted to be the happy side of the house. And we were.”
However, it was during Donald Trump’s campaign for the presidency in which she writes truthfully about her anger toward her husband’s successor. “Donald Trump, with his loud and reckless innuendos, was putting my family’s safety at risk. And for this, I’d never forgive him.”
The former First Lady says Trump wasn’t aware of the severity of his language. “For him it was a game. But the threats that you face as the commander in chief are real.”
