While on a short break in the middle of a Jan. 29 night, a Milwaukee County Transit System bus driver decided to pick up just one more passenger before she took a breather. According to ABC News, Denise Wilson spotted a 5-year-old boy confusingly walking the streets, and without any hesitation, she gave the child shelter in the motor vehicle.
Just a little after midnight, Wilson said she was confused by what she was witnessing. “…I’m just like, am I really seeing what I’m seeing?” she recalled after observing the unidentified child outside by himself with socks on and an oversized shirt. “He came out of nowhere, out of nowhere. I just happened to look over and heard him crying.”
The news site adds that the weather for that night hit a low of 22 degrees. Once the boy was safe and sound on the bus, Wilson gave him a jacket to increase his warmth level, and a meal while she called 911. “I’m happy I made that stop,” Wilson told WISN-TV, adding that she’s been employed with the transit system for six months. “You know, I always say God puts us in places, you know, where he needs us at times,” Wilson said. “I don’t look at it as being a hero — just being there to help.”
Escorted by the police, the child returned home to his family. Officials deemed that the boy “left the house by mistake.”
