Baton Rouge police arrested a mother after her 2-year-year-old son accidentally shot her 1-year-old daughter while they were in car. Crystal Kinchen, 23, was booked in the East Baton Rouge Parish prison and charged with second-degree cruelty to a juvenile.
Baton Rouge law enforcement said the shooting happened Tuesday night (Nov. 15) while Kinchen, the two children and an unidentified male were sitting in the car parked in a strip mall. Police say the boy picked up the gun and accidentally fired it, shooting the little girl in the face.
“[Kinchen] advised she thought it was a firecracker, but [the male] discovered her daughter on the floor of the vehicle suffering from a gunshot wound,” CBS affiliate WAFB reported. “During the interview, [Kinchen] admitted to being preoccupied on her cellphone.”
The 1-year-old girl was then taken to the hospital where she remains in critical condition.
