A mother of three was killed attempting to protect her children from flying bullets at a Bronx park Saturday (June 11) night. Jessica White, 29, was sitting on a bench when a gunman opened fire in the playground area of the John Adams Houses.
White immediately jumped up to shield the children and was shot below her heart, the New York Daily News reports. Authorities say the incident was gang-related, and White was not an intended target.
The unknown gunman was reportedly aiming for a group of men sitting in the area, White’s mother, Gola, recalled.
“I believe that the bullets were for them, but bullets don’t have no name, bullets don’t have no direction,” she said. “When my daughter stood up she got hit under her heart, and she’s gone.”
White’s two brothers performed CPR on her until paramedics arrived. She was transported to Lincoln Medical Center, where she died.
Her children were not injured in the shooting.
