At 9 a.m. on Friday (June 10), Muhammad Ali began his final journey through his hometown. Reportedly, the streets of Louisville, Ky., were lined with fans and supporters as the 90-minute funeral procession passed his childhood home, his high school and Columbia Gym, where he first trained and fell in love with boxing.
Actor Will Smith, who portrayed The Greatest in the 2001 film Ali, and former world heavyweight boxing champion Mike Tyson are listed among the pallbearers for Ali’s memorial service.
The procession will end at Cave Hill Cemetery, where Ali will be buried in a private ceremony.
Ali planned his funeral years ago, and he insisted that the services be open and inclusive. In accordance with his wishes, the memorial service is being live streamed on www.alicenter.org. Also, representatives from the Islamic, Protestant, Jewish, Catholic, Buddhist and Mormon faiths are scheduled to speak during the service.
