The Muslim-American community in Pittsburgh has raised more than $100,000 for the victims of the synagogue shooting, which left 11 men and women dead.
According to a crowdfunding campaign on Launchedgood, originally the goal was to raise $25,000, but in the two days since the shooting, the Muslim-focused fundraising website raised exactly $144, 221.
“The Muslim-American community extends its hands to help the shooting victims, whether it is the injured victims or the Jewish families who have lost loved ones,” the fundraising page reads.
The money will help the victim’s families with funeral costs and other unexpected bills. Sunday night (Oct. 28) the executive director of the Islamic Center of Pittsburgh spoke at a community event and even offered to stand outside of the synagogue and act as security for those who still want to worship.
Saturday morning, (Oct. 27) Robert Bowers entered the Tree of Life Synagogue with an AR-15 assault rifle and fired off several rounds killing those who came to worship. Before Bowers surrendered to police, he engaged in a shootout with officers, wounding four in the process as well as himself.
Scott Brady, the U.S. attorney for the western district of Pennsylvania is awaiting approval from Attorney General Jeff Sessions to proceed with a capital punishment.
Robert Bowers, 46, faces 29 charges including 11 hate-crime charges.
