A biracial family in Wichita, Kansas received the shock of their lives Monday (August 22) when they opened the mail to find an unsigned letter from a neighbor insisting the neighborhood doesn’t need any black residents.
“We have noticed there are some black children at your residence,” the letter reads. “Maybe you are running a daycare or these are your children. In either case, we have put our house for sale. This neighborhood does not need any blacks in it.”
The anonymous writer goes onto to claim that the biracial family has committed a great disrespect against the community, and alleges the family doesn’t belong.
“There is a reason for saying the other side of the tracks. That is where these people belong. You have done a great disrespect in this neighborhood by not thinking of your neighbors.”
If the person is caught, they’ll face disorderly conduct charges. However, the letter has still sent a shockwave through the family. Nancy Wirths, who is the grandmother to the children mentioned in the letter, told local outlet KSN she hasn’t allowed her grandchildren to go outside.
“These are kids under the age of 10 where me and their parents are trying to raise them, you have to love everybody, be friends with everybody,” Wirths told KSN. “It doesn’t matter if they’re brown, purple.”
