In a generation where the beat thrives, lyrics are finally catching weight. Atlanta rapper Kap G has created some noise over his song “La Policia (Remix)” with T.I. and David Banner. Kap G and Tip took to CNN, where they were asked questions about the severity of the lyrics, the possible danger the song might spark, and what exactly is going through their minds about police interaction and race relations.
“I think there is a disregard in underserved areas of society when it comes to interaction with law enforcement,” Tip said. “I think there is a resentment, a undeniable fear law enforcement have for young minorities and it is reflected in their actions. Of course that leads to angry lyrics because our music historically has been a reflection of the circumstances, so if you don’t like our lyrics you should change the circumstances that inspire them.”
There have been countless unjust deaths in the past year due to police brutality. The song “La Policia” by Kap G and T.I. highlight the deaths of Michael Brown and Eric Garner and expresses their joint frustration and exhaustion due to corrupt cops. Kap G spoke up about his feelings.
“I’m not afraid of police, its just you see on the news, everyday life, the things that they’re doing is just not good right now,” he said. “The reason I wrote this song [“La Policia”] is because I was racially profiled. Me being Mexican-American, the whole situation, two years ago I got pulled over, the whole situation was unfair. They just wanted to check my car, asked for my ID because they thought I was illegal.”
When confronted with the notion that their lyrics are dangerous and may lead to other deaths, T.I. makes it clear that they are “calling for the death of our people to end.”
“La Policia” was released earlier this month, and got quite a response. In an interview with Fader, he detailed his experience and where the song came from:
”I wrote this song two years ago, out of frustration from being pulled over for no reason after leaving a studio session. I didn’t think much about who would hear this song when I recorded it, I just knew that this feeling was too painful and demeaning to not speak on it. I felt, as a young Mexican American writer, artist, and youngin, that it was my responsibility to give a voice to this feeling that sooo many young minorities were dealing with.”
In positive light, hopefully the intentions of Kap G and T.I. spread like wildfire and shed some light on what is really going on within society. Watch the full interview from CNN up top.
