A Beaumont, Texas high school teacher is facing a misdemeanor assault charge after footage of her repeatedly hitting a student while in class has gone viral.
Mary. A Hastings, 63, hit a student five times while in her geometry class in Ozen High School for swiping papers off the student’s desk. Hastings, who has taught at the Beaumont Independent School District for three years, was arrested and placed on administrative leave.
“BISD does not condone employees abusing any child and will not tolerate such conduct,” Nakisha Burns, a spokeswoman for the school district said in a statement. “The teacher was immediately removed from the classroom and placed on administrative leave pending action on her contract.”
Hastings was booked inside the Jefferson County jail on a misdemeanor assault charge and later released on $2,500 bond.
