A breakthrough has been reached in the case of Tyshawn Lee, the nine-year-old who was killed in an alleged revenge plot that shocked the nation last November.
USA Today reports Dwight Boone-Doty, 22, was charged with first-degree murder after it was revealed he was the man who pulled the trigger. Tyshawn was playing basketball on Chicago’s southside on Nov. 2 when he was lured into an alleyway and shot in execution style in the head. His death was widely mourned by activists and celebrities like Jada Pinkett-Smith.
Police are hanging on to the narrative that Tyshawn’s murder was revenge for the death of Tracey Morgan, an alleged gang rival of Tyshawn’s father. Morgan’s brother Corey Morgan was initially considered a person of interest and arrested on a $1 million bond just weeks after the shooting. Prosecutors believe Morgan and another suspect watched the incident in a getaway vehicle.
Karla Lee, Tyshawn’s mother, provided her thoughts on the arrest via Facebook and claimed Boone-Doty bragged about the shooting in a song.
Boone-Doty was already in police custody on unrelated gun charges. Fox News reports Boone-Doty was also charged with first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder and aggravated battery with a firearm for the shooting of Brianna Jenkins.

The 19-year-old was sitting in a car Oct. 18 with Deshari Bowens, 20, another rival of the suspect’s when she was killed. With Chicago’s prosecution rate dangerously low, a sign of the arrests of Boone-Doty and Morgan show promise to the troubled city.
