Following a shootout at a Lexington, Kentucky-based Cook Out restaurant, Trinity Gay, U.S. Olympian Tyson Gay’s 15-year-old daughter, died after being struck in the neck by the gunfire, WKYT reports.
The shooting occurred before the break of dawn on Sunday (Oct. 16), where authorities state the now identified suspects (Chazerae Taylor, 38, his son D’Markeo, 19, and Dvonta Middlebrooks, 21), engaged in gunfire between two cars.
Taylor and his son were charged with “wanton endangerment,” while Middlebrooks will face charges of the same, and “possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.”
“She didn’t make it,” Gay said to Lex 18 once the news broke. “I’m so confused. She was just here last week for fall break. It’s so crazy. I have no idea what happened.” Trinity was also a track star at Lafayette High School, the same school her father attended.
Mayor Jim Gray issued a statement on the occurrence as well, calling for a thorough investigation. “Tragedies like this require us to pull together as a caring community, and we are doing that. As our police investigation into the death of this young woman continues, we have reached out to family and, in this case, to our schools, to ensure everything possible is being done. I want to express my deepest sympathy to family and friends. And I would call upon anyone who can provide assistance to police to please step forward.”
An investigation is still ongoing.
