Lexington, Kentucky held a vigil for slain teen, Trinity Gay, who was killed by a stray bullet on Sunday night (Oct. 16). Attended by her father, U.S. Olympic sprinter, Tyson Gay, the city somberly poured out to remember the rising track star (Oct. 17).
“I don’t want to read in the paper next week about another senseless killing,” Gay said during the memorial, ABC News reports. “It has to stop.” Gay also described his 15-year-old as someone who was “happy all the time.”
According to a friend of Trinity’s, they were headed to a Cook Out restaurant with friends after a birthday celebration. They stopped to use a nearby bathroom when gunshots rang out. Trinity was hit in the neck, and passed away upon arrival at UK hospital. The family also released a statement following news of Trinity’s death.
“The family appreciates the outpouring of support during the loss of our beautiful Trinity. She will be truly missed by all. She touched so many people on so many different levels. We ask for your continued prayers and privacy during this difficult time. We are a family that believes in love and forgiveness. We are also asking for prayers for the 3 men accused and their families during what is also a difficult time for them.”
Three suspects were charged with wanton endangerment, while one of them was also charged with possession of a firearm as a felon. They have all plead not guilty while the investigation is still ongoing.
