The topic of reparations is making strides. According to Yahoo, United Nations specialists stated that the United States of America owes reparations to African Americans due to a trail of “racial terrorism.” The presentation took place at the United Nations Human Rights Council on Monday (Sept. 26).
Reparations was a central topic of discussion following the recent deaths of unarmed black people at the hands of law enforcement. The U.N.’s report outlines that, “Contemporary police killings and the trauma they create are reminiscent of the past racial terror of lynchings.”
The report was drafted by the United Nations’ Working Group of Experts on People of African Descent, the Washington Post adds. The assembly states that the forms of reparations that could be administered to descendants of slaves include “a formal apology, health initiatives, educational opportunities,” and “financial support, and debt cancellation.”
The Post also states that a movement on behalf of Caribbean nations plans to highlight substantial reasons for “reparatory justice” from former European countries, concerning the impact of “native genocide and slavery.”
Points that were listed include an “African Knowledge Program,” debt cancellation, an “Indigenous Peoples Development Program,” and “attention to be paid to the ‘Public Health Crisis'” throughout the Caribbean nations.
“Thousands of people of African descent were killed in violent public acts of racial control and domination,” the report summarizes, “and the perpetrators were never held accountable.”
