Imagine getting that dream job interview, and just when you think things are going good for your situation they ask you a question that leaves you with the ‘WTF?’ face: “Can we get your Facebook password, please?”
This somewhat ridiculous theory was the reality for working statistician Justin Bassett. As Yahoo! Finance reports, via Associated Press, he was shocked when the interviewer turned to her computer to search for his Facebook page. When she couldn’t see his private profile, she turned back and asked him to hand over his login information.
While Bassett was able to decline and withdraw his application, a lot of people in the same job market don’t have that luxury. When confronted with the same question from employers, how do you make the decision of privacy vs. monetary advancement?
Companies that don’t ask for passwords take other steps. Alternatives have included asking applicants to ‘friend’ managers or to log-in to the company computer during the interview. Also, some workers have also been required to sign non-disparagement agreements that ban them from bashing their employers on social media networks.
