Another historic visit from President Barack Obama is in the works, as the 44th President is slated to visit Hiroshima, Japan later this month. He will be the first sitting U.S. president to visit the site since a nuclear bomb was dropped on it in 1945.
This historic trip will “highlight his continued commitment to pursuing the peace and security of a world without nuclear weapons,” according to a statement.
“By having President Obama visit Hiroshima and see the realities of radiation exposure, and by having him communicate his thoughts and feelings to the world, I believe this will lend great power towards achieving a world without nuclear weapons,” said Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. President Obama’s visit coincides with his G-7 Summit meeting in Ise-Shima.
During World War II, the United States dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima on Aug. 6, 1945, killing 140,000, and three days later, another bomb was dropped on Nagasaki, Japan.
