While it seems like the vast majority of us are fans of the poise, grace, candor, and honesty of former First Lady Michelle Obama, it appears that the United States’ current president isn’t.
In her new memoir Becoming, which also prompted a subsequent national book tour of the same name, Mrs. Obama opened up about a host of sensitive, deeply personal topics. In one section of the book, she talked about the feeling of having a miscarriage. In another, she let her opinions fly about the man currently running the country and the negative impact his xenophobic rhetoric had on her family.
“The whole [birther] thing was crazy and mean-spirited, of course, its underlying bigotry and xenophobia hardly concealed,” she wrote in the book. “But it was also dangerous, deliberately meant to stir up the wingnuts and kooks. What if someone with an unstable mind loaded a gun and drove to Washington? What if that person went looking for our girls? Donald Trump, with his loud and reckless innuendos, was putting my family’s safety at risk. And for this, I’d never forgive him.”
Trump caught wind of her book excerpt and had some strong words of his own. His way of responding to her lack of forgiveness was trashing both her and her husband’s presidency as it pertained to the military.
“I guess she wrote a book. She got paid a lot of money to write a book. And they always insist you come up with controversial,” Trump reportedly said while leaving the White House for Paris. “Well, I’ll give you a little controversy back: I’ll never forgive [President Obama] for what he did to our United States military. By not funding properly, it was depleted. Everything was old and tired. And I came in and I had to fix it.”
Trump also alluded to having more tea to spill, if you will. “So I’ll never forgive him for what he did to our military,” he said. “I’ll never forgive him for what he did in many other ways — which I’ll talk to you about in the future.”
