Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump took another attempt at pandering to African-American voters this weekend by attending a black church in Detriot, Michigan.
CNN reports Trump was in attendance with Dr. Ben Carson, his wife Candy and director of black outreach, Omarosa Manigault at the Great Faith Ministries on Saturday (Sept. 2.) After dancing to gospel hymns and f
aking the funk, Trump took the time to speak to churchgoers about the needs of the black community. “For centuries, the African-American church has been the conscience of this country. So true,” Trump said. “The African-American faith community has been one of God’s greatest gifts to America and its people.” Like every politician, Trump touched on education and promises of jobs and companies for African-Americans.
He also pushed the idea of a new civil rights agenda. “I believe we need a civil rights agenda for our time,” he said. “One that ensures the rights to a great education — so important — and the right to live in safety and in peace, and to have a really, really great job, a good-paying job and one that you love to go to every morning. And that can happen.” Trump raised no points around the Black Lives Matter movement, which has raised awareness on police brutality and violent practices against people of color.
Outside of the church stood protestor who claimed Trump used the church and its members as pawns in the race to the White House. Lawrence Glass, the president of the Council of Baptist Pastors of Detroit and Vicinity, told reporters African-American voters “will not be trumpets to get his message of fear and hate out.”

“He is speaking at a black church, which is not equivalent to speaking to a black church,” Glass said. Trump’s approach to grabbing the black vote has softened since last month. Speaking to the residents of Dimondale, Michigan, Trump told the predominately white crowd Black voters have nothing to lose in placing their vote for the businessman. “You’re living in poverty, your schools are no good, you have no jobs, 58% of your youth is unemployed — what the hell do you have to lose?” Trump said.
