Previously, Kanye West donated over $70,000 to Chicago’s Amara Enyia‘s campaign to help settle fines. The mayoral candidate faced monetary roadblocks by the Illinois State Board of Elections that stemmed from a previous campaign. Now, West is back to carve out another great sum to further Enyia’s political pursuits.
According to NBC Chicago, the Ye rapper gave $126,460 to Enyia’s mayoral efforts. In a statement issued by the politician’s campaign spokesperson Kristi Kucera, West has expressed a great interest in giving back to his hometown of Chicago. “We think it is valuable that he is able to focus his efforts on his creative work and on supporting the platform that he believes will help move our city in the right direction.”
Per the news site, Chance the Rapper, who has been a present supporter of Enyia’s mission, said other mayoral candidates are beginning to feel the pressure because the city’s people are tuning in more than ever. “Nobody wants to vote for who should be mayor, everybody wants to vote for who could be mayor,” he said.
West’s gesture arrives a few days after he took to Twitter to share that he’s backing away from the political spotlight. “My eyes are now wide open and now realize I’ve been used to spread messages I don’t believe in,” he wrote. “I am distancing myself from politics and completely focusing on being creative!!!”
