Mayor on food stamps – that’s probably a first. Newark Mayor Cory Booker has been a Twitter fiend recently, and after getting into an argument on social media with an ardent opponent of the Supplemental Food Assistance Program, or SNAP, Booker says he will willingly go on food stamps to prove how difficult it is to survive on government assistance.
The Star-Ledger spoke to Booker, who said: “You can see from the twitter discussion that people have a real lack of understanding of the struggles that many families have to go through — hard working families that play by the rules.”
The mayor on food stamps challenge arose after a conservative tweeter told Booker that “Nutrition is not a responsibility of the government.” The details are still being hammered out, but it seems the mayor and the tweeter will both go on government assistance to see how a large portion of the country lives every day.
“One of my main goals will be to shine light on programs like this and dispel stereotypes that exist,” said Booker.
Booker is already known as one of the most candid and passionate politicians in the country, and now that he’s the Mayor on food stamps, he’s sure to attract more support.
