President Obama sharply criticized the Senate for not passing bipartisan gun control measures Wednesday (April 17), even as victims of the Newtown shootings and former Congresswoman and shooting victim Gabrielle Giffords looked on during voting.
The New York Times reported the President spoke from the Rose Garden, saying: “All in all, this was a pretty shameful day for Washington.”
The President accused the gun lobby of lying about the background check bill, and that both Republicans and Democrats alike “caved to the pressure” from the minority of gun lobbyists who opposed the measure.
The President insisted that this defeat was merely “round one,” saying “Sooner or later, we are going to get this right. The memories of these children demand it, and so do the American people.”
