Shaquille O’Neal respects Colin Kaepernick’s decision to take a knee during the National Anthem, but personally wouldn’t use the same method to protest police brutality. The 44-year-old retired NBA player sat with Fox News and when asked how he feels about the quarterback’s latest political statement, O’Neal said it’s Kaepernick’s prerogative.
“To each his own. It’s something I wouldn’t do. There have been times when they’re are injustices; there has always been injustices. Me personally I would probably go about it in a different way,” O’Neal said. “My question is, what happened last year? How come you didn’t decide to do this last year? Or the year before that or the year before that? “

Kaepernick has been at the center of controversy ever since he sat during the Star Spangled Banner before the 49ers went up against the Green Bay Packers. Since then, his non-violent protest has either been praised or deemed disrespectful by fans and athletes.
While Jerry Rice and Ray Lewis both went on the record disagreeing with Kap’s protest, President Obama said he respects the 28-year-old for “exercising his constitutional rights.”
