Jaden Newman is the definition of “playing like a girl.” At 10 years old, Newman is a member of the Downey Christian high school varsity basketball team in Orlando, Fl. Gaining national attention after besting Golden State Warrior Stephen Curry in a three-point contest earlier this year, Newman is back at it. Her latest feat was accomplished at her team’s season-opening game last Tuesday (Nov. 10). She scored a whopping 57 points.
In addition to Downey Christian’s 94-7 win, Newman has been eyed as the future of basketball for some time. According to Sports Illustrated, she received a recruitment letter from the University of Miami women’s basketball team at 10 years old. She has also played on the varsity team since the third grade. In an interview with Bleacher Report back in July, Newman also revealed her ambitions to be the first woman in the NBA.
“I work hard because i want to be the best girl to ever play basketball. And I want to go to U. Conn, and then go to the WNBA. But I want to be the first girl to go to the NBA.”
Last season, Newman averaged an impressive 30.5 points per game. Watch a few highlights from her high-scoring season opener and learn more about her below:
