Chris Paul is looking to make sure the next generation of pro-basketball players have the necessary resources. According to the Associated Press, the Houston Rockets guard gifted his alma mater, Wake Forest University, with $2.5 million.
The donation will benefit the school’s basketball program, an outlet that Paul was a part of when he donned No. 3 for the Demon Deacons. One of Paul’s goals for the money will be to rehabilitate the men’s and women’s locker rooms, to further sustain relationships between players.
“The locker room transformation project inspired me because that’s where players build relationships and create a unifying camaraderie that is the foundation of success on the court,” Paul said in a statement. “Forming lifelong friendships with your teammates is one of the most rewarding aspects of sports.” The AP adds Paul’s donation set the record for the largest sum made by an alum of the university’s basketball program.
The news follows a string of NBA players using their platform to incite change outside of arenas. LeBron James recently opened up a public school in his native town of Akron, Ohio, and Stephen Curry donated $21,000 to slain Oakland teen Nia Wilson‘s family.
