QB David Garrard quit the New York Jets Wednesday (May 15), which may pave the way for rookie Geno Smith to take the reins.
David Garrard quits the Jets after signing with the team in March, and spending part of last season in Miami. Garrard was on the Dolphin’s roster to begin 2012, but the longtime Jaguars QB has not appeared in an NFL game since 2010 and now seems to be leaning toward retirement.
“David Garrard quits” is music to the ears of new Jet Geno Smith, who was drafted in the second round of the NFL Draft and is expected to contend for the starting QB job with embattled incumbent Mark Sanchez, who lost his job late last season. David Garrard quitting marks the second QB departure for the Jets in as many months – Tim Tebow was famously released after the NFL Draft, and has yet to catch on anywhere else.
