Knicks Stans saw it coming.
New team president Phil Jackson released a statement this morning (April 21), saying that Woodson has been relieved of his coaching duties:
“I have a tremendous amount of respect for Mike Woodson and his entire staff. The coaches and players on this team had an extremely difficult 2013-14 season, and blame should not be put on one individual. But the time has come for change throughout the franchise as we start the journey to assess and build this team for next season and beyond.”
Woodson had led the struggling team to the number 7 slot in the Eastern Conference when he took over for Mike D’Antoni as head coach in March 2012. Things have now soured, as this season is the first time the Knicks have not clinched a playoff berth since 2010.
Jackson was brought on as team Prez in March to help restore the New York team’s legacy, with 11 championship rings and multiple chips with the Chicago Bulls and Los Angeles Lakers on his resume.
