Colin Kaepernick is still making strides in his fight against social injustice and police brutality, which was further solidified by Nike’s endorsement. After an ad featuring the former San Francisco 49er for the brand’s “Just Do It” campaign surfaced (Sept. 3), his peers in sports voiced their support for the company’s decision.
After Serena Williams shared her stance, LeBron James also echoed the tennis champ’s sentiments and said, matter-of-factly, “I stand with Nike, all day, every day.” According to the Associated Press, the Los Angeles Laker uttered that statement during his honor at Harlem’s Fashion Row event with Nike (Sept. 4).
Per ESPN, James has expressed his fondness of Kaepernick’s mission for equality and likened him to Muhammad Ali and Martin Luther King Jr. “I’ve commended Kap, and for him to sacrifice everything for the greater good for everyone, for what he truly believed in, the utmost respect to him,” James said in late 2017. “Obviously he had a vision like Martin Luther King and like some of our all-time greats that people couldn’t see further than what they were doing at the point and time. And Muhammad Ali and things of that nature…For him to sacrifice the sport that he plays and to sacrifice the things he’s done his whole life because he knew what he believed in, I salute him. I salute and respect that.”
