LeBron James spoke to The Hollywood Reporter for their latest cover, where he detailed his entertainment and production endeavors. The newest Los Angeles Laker, who recently enlisted Ryan Coogler as a producer for the upcoming Space Jam sequel, is hard at work becoming one of Tinsel Town’s hottest producers and content creators.
While the aforementioned film is sure to have a host of celebrity cameos, James was questioned about the possibility of having the original film’s star Michael Jordan appear. As of right now, that’s still up in the air.
“Hopefully there will be a role for Michael if he wants it,” said James’ production partner Maverick Carter. “But Michael Jordan is Michael F**kin’ Jordan. It doesn’t matter [if James] calls him, he’s gonna do whatever the hell he wants, which he has earned that right to do… LeBron and Michael are not sitting around talking about Space Jam.”
Additionally, his company SpringHill Entertainment is creating a Netflix series about Madam C.J. Walker, which stars Octavia Spencer. HBO will also be the home to his show Student Athlete, which is about “college players going unpaid while their universities make millions.” What he enjoys most, however, is how he’s creating more opportunities for people in the industry who may not have had the opportunity before.
“I used to go on set [of Survivor’s Remorse, a show for which he was Executive Producer for] and see all the jobs that we were creating,” he said. “More than anything I’ve ever accomplished on a basketball floor, to be able to see that, like people that never get recognized from craft services all the way to the person putting a mic on your chest? That is a pretty cool thing.”
“The goal is to continue to do what we’ve been doing, and if we make a billion-dollar company at the end of it, we will pat each other on the back, hug each other, pop some great wine,” he continued. “But that is not the goal. It’s never been the goal. I’m going to continue to play basketball at a high level, continue to give back to my community and make great content for people to fall in love with.”
