Shaquille O’Neal has officially joined the greats.
The Los Angeles Lakers retired his no. 34 jersey Tuesday night (April 2) before a packed house at the Staples Center at halftime when the team hosted the Dallas Mavericks.
Those closest to the four-time NBA champion were in attendance, including his 5 children and former coach Phil Jackson.
“How much fun we had, the wins, the titles,” Jackson said. “For me, Shaquille, I want to thank you for your dedication, leadership and the hard work you put in.”
Even the Lakers star player Kobe Bryant — who won three championships tag teaming with Shaq — had a few words to share.
“Well, it’s amazing how times flies,” Bryant said. “I just got to say congratulations to you, the most gifted physical specimen I seen play the game.”
