It’s a sad day for New Orleans Pelican fans.
It’s been reported 23-year-old guard Bryce Dejean-Jones was shot in the abdomen and later died from his injuries after breaking down the door of the wrong apartment in Dallas, TX.
According to police, authorities received a call about a shooting at Camden Belmont Apartments at about 3:20 am Saturday. (May 28) The resident of the apartment said an individual kicked open the front door. At this time, the resident retrieved a handgun and called out to the individual but did not receive an answer. The individual then kicked the bedroom door and the resident fired a shot through the door, hitting the individual.
Responding officers found Jones collapsed in an outdoor passageway. Per an email sent to residents of the Camden Belmont Apartments, Jones intended to enter the home of an “estranged acquaintance” but unfortunately entered the wrong residence. Jones was later pronounced dead at the hospital.
The former USC and Iowa State player was visiting his girlfriend in Dallas for his daughter’s first birthday, according to his agent Scott Nichols. Nichols then said the girlfriend returned to the apartment first, while Jones went for a walk after they’d gone out.
“He went to the wrong apartment unfortunately and I think he thought his girlfriend locked him out, so he was knocking on the door, banging on the door, it’s locked,” Nichols told the Associated Press. “So one thing led to another.
According to reports, no charges have been filed against the apartment resident. News of Jones’ death rippled through the NBA with many taking to Twitter to express their condolences.
