U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg is the latest person to weigh in on the controversial Colin Kaepernick kneeling protest. In an interview with Katie Couric for Yahoo, the second female Supreme Court Justice ever appointed who is known as “Notorious RBG,” said that the 49ers quarterback’s actions are both “dumb and disrespectful.”
“I think it’s really dumb,” the 83-year-old well-known liberal said in the clip, released on Monday (Oct. 10). “Would I arrest them for doing it? No. It’s dumb and disrespectful.” She also added that her reaction towards Kaepernick elicits the same response she would give towards those who burn the flag.
However, she also noted that the athletes who have chosen to kneel are exercising their rights, and would not be breaking the law in doing so.
“It’s dangerous to arrest people for conduct that doesn’t jeopardize the health and well-being of other people,” she continues. “If they want to be stupid, there’s no law that should be preventive. If they want to be arrogant, there’s no law that prevents that. What I would do is strongly take issue with the point of view that they are expressing when they do that.”
