Shortly after the Philadelphia 76ers issued an apology to Sevyn Streeter after they reportedly did not allow her to perform the national anthem while wearing a “We Matter” jersey, the organization has extended a second invitation to the singer to perform during another game. In a statement to The Associated Press Saturday (Nov. 5), the 76ers announced that Sevyn’s performance has been rescheduled for next month.
Sevyn has been scheduled to sing “The Star-Spangled Banner” in the Philly team’s game against the Los Angeles Lakers on Dec. 16. In a separate statement released on her Instagram account, Sevyn accepted the organization’s apology and spoke about how everyone could move “onwards and upwards.”
“In order to move forward, it was important to me that we take action and use this as an opportunity to create a positive change and dialogue throughout the community,” she wrote. “The Sixers and I plan to work together through multiple community outreach programs to promote inclusion and acceptance.” She also announced that she would be performing again wearing her “We Matter” jersey, just as she intended to do before.
The “It Won’t Stop” singer isn’t the only figure who’s sought to keep the conversation going concerning the Black Lives Matter Movement. The singer’s protest follows social worker Denasia Lawrence’s national anthem performance, in which she kneeled while singing during the 76ers and Miami Heat game in Oct. 2016.
