Despite two uncharacteristic falls on the vault and balance beam and dealing with kidney stone pain, Simone Biles made history at the 2018 Artistic Gymnastics World Championships in Doha, Qatar.
According to reports, the 21-year-old won the all-around title by a nearly two-point margin, her largest margin of victory during this particular event. This is the fourth time Biles has won the all-around at Worlds, making her the first female gymnast in history to do so.
However, she’s not too pleased with her performance this time around. As mentioned above, two falls during the competition and going out of bounds during a floor exercise tumbling pass didn’t make the Olympic champion a happy camper.
“It’s not the gymnast that I am, to go out there and kind of bomb a meet like this,” Biles told the Associated Press of her self-proclaimed less-than-stellar meet. “Even though I won, I wish it were a little bit different.” Despite the falls, her scores on most apparatus were still higher than several of her competitors.
Other than clinching the all-around gold, Biles also performed a new skill on the vault, which is now the third skill named after her (since it was performed in International competition). The vault ‘Biles’ is a roundoff, half-twist onto the table, front double full off that- in the past- has only been done by men.
As of press time, Biles dusted yesterday’s vault fall off and landed her skill during the event finals, winning the gold medal with a score of 15.366.
