During Stephen Curry‘s SC30 Select Showcase on Tuesday (Aug. 7), the three-time NBA champion decided to use his platform as a public figure to do something life-changing for a family that experienced a sudden loss. According to CBS SF Bay Area, Curry and the National Basketball Players Association Foundation raised over $20,000 for Nia Wilson‘s family.
Wilson, 18, was fatally stabbed on July 22 while walking the platform of a Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) station with her sister. The pair were headed home when John Cowell, 27, stabbed both Wilson and her sister Letifah. The attack was unprovoked. According to KGO, Letifah said they were “blindsided” by Cowell’s actions and never had any interaction with him prior to the incident. Cowell has been charged with murder.
During a live stream of Curry and his brother Seth’s showcase – where the world’s top 20 high school basketball guards get a chance to train with the pro-athletes – the father-of-three announced a link to donate to Wilson’s family. Wilson’s father, Ansar Mohammed, said Curry “was looking forward to spending time with us, me and my family.”
Following Wilson’s death, celebrities like Viola Davis, Tracee Ellis Ross, Janelle Monae, Kehlani, and Common tried to make sense of this incident.
