After avoiding criminal charges for a fatal car crash in June 2017, Venus Williams and the victim’s estate reached a settlement in a wrongful death lawsuit.
Initially reported by TMZ, the accident took place on June 9 in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. Jerome Barson and Williams’ vehicles came into contact when the tennis player reportedly got stuck in an intersection. The injuries sent the 78-year-old to the hospital where he died two weeks later.
According to CNN, court documents filed last week detailed the lawsuit was “dismissed with prejudice after a settlement was reached between Williams and Barson’s estate, but the settlement amount was not listed.”
In an investigation spearheaded by Florida State authorities, the video surveillance supported the fact that the 37-year-old athlete entered the intersection lawfully. Being that Williams was not held at fault, the family of the deceased did file a lawsuit citing negligence.
The last time Williams spoke publicly about the fatal incident, the tennis pro was left in tears when a reporter asked her about the tragedy. “Yeah, I’m… completely speechless and it’s just… Yeah, I mean, I’m just…,” she stammered trying to catch her words.
Although there’s no public release of the settlement’s details, Williams may finally be able to put the devastating events behind her.
