On Sunday January 13, 2013 Col. Calvin Elam was promoted to the rank of brigadier general at the McEntire Joint National Guard Base outside of Columbia, South Carolina. Elam is now the first black Air National Guard promoted to General in the history of South Carolina. Elam had been serving as the assistant adjutant general for Air for the South Carolina National Guard was promoted by the Adjutant General, Maj. Gen. Robert E. Livingston. General Elam was born in Greenwood, SC and was commissioned in December of 1988 when he graduated from the Air National Guard’s Academy of Military Science. Before that he was an enlisted Airman and spent six years on active duty leading to a career as a contracting specialist. He earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Marketing from the University of South Carolina’s Darla Moore School of Business. As a civilian, Elam is Chief Executive Officer for EFG/ProVest Wealth Management Group.

Elam is a Claflin University Board of Trustees member and has been honored for his achievement in a special ceremony. The General has been a member of the University’s Board of Trustees since 2009 and is currently serving as chair of the Board’s Budget and Finance Committee. Maj. Gen. Robert E. Livingston says that “Cal has had a long and distinguished career in the Air Force and the South Carolina Air National Guard and this promotion to brigadier general culminates many years of hard work and dedicated service to his state and nation. He is the epitome of the Citizen-Airman.”

Formed in 1946, the South Carolina Air National Guard consists of more than 1500 Airmen who work and drill at McEntire Joint National Guard Base. The 2400 acre base is located about 12 miles east of Columbia. The now General Elam resides in Irmo with his wife Mary and their three children.
