The 10 Commandments Of Club Etiquette

October 2, 2013 - 8:00 pm by Gabrielle Pharms

This fall has such a promising lineup of events – Sensation USA, HARD NYC, and the Ed Banger Records 10th Anniversary Party are just a few. With all of the buzz and excitement surrounding these festivities, reminders are both helpful and essential to a problem-free night. Bad things do happen to good people, but most ill-fated occurrences are self-inflicted. Think of us at VIBE as the big brother or sister that’s giving you the advice you need in order to avoid incriminating drunk girl photos. We present VIBE’s Ten Commandments of Club Etiquette. This compilation of clubland faux pas’ are targeted at the ladies, but guys can also relate to some. ->

Thou shall not be “that” girl (or guy). No one appreciates someone cutting to the front of the line, especially when temperatures are below 30 degrees. Do yourself and everyone a favor by making sure you’re actually on the list. Photo Credit: Getty Images

Thou shall dress weather appropriate. Once upon a time, I was walking to the PACHA entrance for an Afrojack set and overheard guys bashing a group of gorgeous girls. Why? The pretty dimes were donning bandeau skirts and sleeveless tops…without tights or a coat. Ladies, guys value common sense over sexiness. Besides, just about every music venue offers coat check. The only time it’s acceptable to go completely coatless is if you’re going straight from a cab to the entrance. Otherwise, no exceptions. Photo Credit: Getty Images

Thou shall turn up, but not get sloppy. At some point in your life, you have experienced the unfortunate side effects of too much booze. Alas, some of us have been publicly inebriated. We live in a time where drunk pics go viral with the push of a button. Whether you take an involuntary, tequila (it will mess you up) induced disco nap IN the club or make out with a random stranger – be aware that this could cost you. Photo Credit: Getty Images

Thou shall not hate on girls that wear flowers in their hair in the cooler months. Granted wearing floral crowns have become quite a cliché staple at summer music festivals and DJ sets, they are quite chic. Flowers are a step up for the dolls that want to graduate from fluffies (Care Bear furry boots) to crowns AND they look even more femme fatale with a black mini dress. Meow. I found the perfect flowery crown (custom made) for my Mysteryland trip via Panda’s Box Shop on Etsy. Photo Credit: Getty Images

Thou shall be aptly dressed for the venue of choice. A slinky blouse and denim skinny jeans will cut it at Webster Hall, but that will get you rejected at the swankier clubs, such as LAVO. When in doubt, wear a black dress – it’s timeless and can be dressed up or dialed down with the swap of a pair of shoes. Nasty Gal has an abundance of date-with-the-night style dresses. Thou should be mindful of thy words. It all started with a clueless girl uttering this statement at a Calvin Harris show: “Play something original.” Calvin then proceeded to reprimand the damned damsel and have her escorted out of the club. Yikes. Sure you have freedom of speech, but discern when to speak and when to simply express yourself through dance. If you personally think the set “sucks,” just take your leave. Thou shall tip. For whatever reason, certain clubgoers don’t think it’s necessary to tip anyone. Don’t be a jerk. Follow the rules of tipping: • 15% to 20% of your bar tab • $1 per coat at coat check • $2 to $5 for valet attendants. Depending on the venue and your request to leave your car out front, the tip will be higher ($10 to $30) • $0.50 to $1 for a restroom attendant Photo Credit: Getty Images

Thou shall dance. This should be unambiguous, yet there are wallflowers that make their way to the front of the DJ booth. Take your humdrum vibe to the back and leave the front for the individuals that came to party. Photo Credit: Getty Images

Thou shall not disrupt the peace. Being in a packed out club can certainly test your patience. If you’re going to a sold out show, be prepared to get your toes stepped on – both literally and figuratively. Let it go and recognize that everyone is there for one common reason: love of music. Thou shall wear something that isn’t ‘dry clean only.’ If you wear that silk Hervé Léger dress or your favorite suede peep toe shoes, an overpriced drink will find a way to spill all over your prized possession. To avoid a drunken meltdown, refrain from wearing an outfit that can be ruined by a splash of wine. It would also be prudent to arm yourself with a Tide to Go pen – it fits perfectly into a clutch bag or a bra. Photo Credit: Getty Images
