10 Famous R&B Diva Feuds

September 18, 2013 - 5:44 pm by Terry Carter Jr.

When it comes to the art of throwing shade, these ladies could teach a course on it. From diss songs to sub tweets, you’ll never know what to expect from R&Beef. Flip through to see which R&B divas are not afraid to bring the claws out if necessary. — Terry Carter Jr. (@KINGBeysus)

Michelle Williams vs Keyshia Cole

How It Started: Keyshia Cole seemed to be enjoying Beyoncé’s Super Bowl halftime performance until Michelle Williams showed up. "Michell [sic] sung and woke my ass up from my daze! She always fuckN the groove up" Keyshia tweeted. The singer was attacked on Twitter by fans and celebrities alike for her off handed comments.

Where It Stands: During a radio interview, Michelle addressed the alleged “beef” with Keyshia, saying, “It’s all good. People make mistakes. I don’t hold that against nobody. I wish everybody the best. I want everybody to win!” Keyshia has since apologized to Michelle for her harsh comments and the two women have started following each other on Twitter. There's hope for a reconciliation after all.

Dawn Richards vs. Danity Kane

How It Started: In every girl group there’s always that one member accused of receiving special treatment. Danity Kane was no exception. The five girls who formed together on the MTV reality series Making the Band began bickering over suspicions that Dawn had ulterior motives to go solo. This caused tension between the group, particularly between Dawn, Aubrey O'Day and D. Woods. Where It Stands:Eventually all of the girls, with the exception of Dawn, were fired from Bad Boy by Diddy himself. This year, ⅘ of the original group members announced their reunion at the MTV Video Music Awards. Photo Credit: hiphollywood.com

Mariah Carey vs. Jennifer Lopez

How It Started:Rumor has it that Mariah Carey’s ex-husband Tommy Mottola gave away some songs that were meant for Mariah to his then-new artist Jennifer Lopez. When asked about Lopez during an interview short after, Mariah replied, "I don't know her," with a disapproving head shake. Where It Stands: Lopez recently addressed the rumors of a feud between the two divas when she sat down for an interview with Mariah's current husband, Nick Cannon. "I’ve always been a big fan of hers. It’s all love from me," she stated. Photo Credit: bet.com

Brandy vs. Monica

How It Started: Did you know Monica had to put the paws on Brandy back in the '90s? While doing radio promo for the 2012 follow up single to their now classic 1998 hit "The Boy Is Mine," Monica accidentally spilled the beans on how she came to blows with Brandy backstage at an MTV award show. Where It Stands: While there was always an alleged beef between the two vocalists, no one knew how bad the situation really got behind closed door. It’s a good thing these women were able to put whatever happened in the past behind them and build a friendship as grown women. Photo Credit: thejasminebrand.com

Tamar Braxton vs. K. Michelle

How It Started:This petty beef seems to have started over a hair piece. Yes. A hair piece. Story goes that Tamar threw some shade at K. Michelle for rocking a similar style of wig on 106 & Park and K. Michelle wasn't feeling that. The Love & Hip-Hop star clapped back with her own tweets calling the Braxton singer a muppet face and accused Tamar of buying her own singles. Where It Stands: After Tamar went on Power 105's The Breakfast Club once again shading her album sales, K. Michelle demanded for Tamar to leave her alone via Twitter. "I bought the album 2 supprt [sic] her. There's enough room for everybody. Just shut up and sing!" she tweeted. Photo Credit: hellobeautiful.com

Keri Hilson vs. Beyoncé

How It Started: In 2009, Keri Hilson allegedly dissed Beyoncé and her career has been on life support ever since. The singer/songwriter was just a newbie in the industry when she (now regretfully) decided to record the indirect diss track that most believed was towards Beyoncé. “She can sing but need to move it to the left (to the left)/You need to go have some babies/She needs to sit down, she fading,” Keri sings on the "Turnin Me Off" remix. Where It Stands: While Bey herself has never replied to the subliminal diss, her ever loyal Beyhive fans verbally attacked the singer for years until Keri recently had a public breakdown on Twitter asking for forgiveness. Keri has recorded an apology track for Beyoncé with Timbaland in which he plans to release on his upcoming studio album. Photo Credit: Popcrush.com

Kelly Price vs. R&B Divas Cast

How It Started: While reality TV can be scripted at times, it can also expose the ugly truth. This season of R&B Divas L.A. shed a new light for fans of R&B/gospel singer Kelly Price. On the show, Kelly was pegged as the diva who was too difficult to work with. Price, who at one point pulled out her Timberland boots and a tube of vaseline prepared to fight during one episode, says she was only on the defense because the other ladies were all against her. Her cast mate, singer Lil Mo, spoke on Kelly's diva antics, saying, “Kelly would act so belligerent at times, they would hire security for some of the sets. We just never knew which face she was going to bring in that day and act like and that’s real.” Where It Stands: At the reunion, Kelly hugged it out with each of the women, thus putting an end to their beef… at least until Season 2. Patti Labelle vs. Diana Ross

How It Started: These legendary divas were feuding long before throwing shade on social media became the “it” thing. Nearly four decades ago, Patti cut off all ties with Ms. Ross after she went behind her back to persuade Cindy Birdsong to leave her girl group The Bluebelles and join The Supremes. “I never came to grips with saying anything to Diana, because I think I would've beat the hell out of her. So instead of me beating her physically, I beat her verbally. Whenever I got a chance, I would say, ‘I hate her,’” Patti said in 2005. Where It Stands: The long standing beef ended that same year when Oprah invited both Patti and Diana to a luncheon, sitting the two at the same table together. “I swear to God, we've been talking for the last--since Oprah's weekend. We've been girlfriends." Patti shared of their rekindled friendship. Photo Credit: bet.com

Rihanna vs. Ciara

How It Started: Before cyber-bullying Chris Brown’s boo thang with a bag of rice cakes, Rihanna was throwing jabs at another singer. After Ciara called out RiRi for not being so nice to her at a party on an episode of E!'s Fashion Police, Rihanna came out swinging. Instead of offering an apology, Rihanna alluded that Ciara was really a man named Cedric and wished her luck booking a stage to perform on anywhere at the time in her career. Where It Stands: Their beef ignited once more earlier this year when Rihanna mocked CiCi's impromptu bathroom performance singing her new single "Body Party." "Somebody please point her in the right direction, cuz clearly she needs love and affection,' Ciara tweeted in response to the video. Photo Credit: Popcrush.com

Beyoncé & Kelly vs. ex Destiny's Child members

How It Started: I'ma let you finish, but Destiny's Child had one of the messiest girl group break ups of all time. The two surviving members, Beyoncé and Kelly Rowland sat down with VIBE in 1999 to discuss the drama and revealed that there had been tension brewing long before the quartet became famous. "They lost focus," Beyoncé said. "They didn't want to do interviews, rehearse, or take voice lessons. Anybody that met us could see that me and Kelly were one group and they were another. It was obvious.” In that same issue, Letoya Luckett refuted those claims, saying “We weren't lazy. When it was time to write, when it was time to sing, we were ready to go. I want to put someone on the stand with a bible and have them say that we didn't work." Where It Stands: Fast forward 14 years later and all of the original DC girls are now cool with each other. In 2012, while accepting her Artist of the Millennium award, Beyoncé thanked Letoya and LaTavia for helping her accomplish her dreams. Photo Credit: necolebitchie.com
