The 10 Most Random Name-Drops On Drake's 'Nothing Was The Same'

September 19, 2013 - 4:11 pm by Chris Yuscavage

By now, you've probably given Drake's new album, Nothing Was the Same, about a dozen spins or so since it leaked on Sunday night. And yet, there's a pretty good chance that you still haven't absorbed everything. Don't worry; neither have we. One minute Drake's rapping his ass off and talking about how much his world has changed since he made it big, and the next he's cooing about how much he misses some chick he used to text. It's a lot to take in at one time.

What further complicates things is the fact that Drake name-drops a number of people on the album. Have you caught them all yet? Probably not. Here, the 10 most random names Drake shouts out on Nothing Was the Same.

Ellen DeGeneres The Name-Drop: "Yeah, Tom Ford, Tuscan Leather, smelling like a brick/Degenerates, but even Ellen love our shit," on "Tuscan Leather" How Random Is It? It's not that random now considering Drake is scheduled to make an appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show later this week. But back when he wrote this song, he couldn't have possibly known that he was going to get invited to be on the show. And while he has actually performed on Ellen's show in the past, the only reason he was invited was because he was on a song with Jamie Foxx, so Drizzy shouting her out is still pretty random. Derrick Rose The Name-Drop: "A n---a fillin' up arenas, who the fuck could see us?/I had to Derrick Rose the knee up before I got the re-up," on "Furthest Thing" How Random Is It? Only slightly random because Drake shouted D-Rose out during a show in Chicago last summer. But did Drake just make a weird comparison between the ACL injury he suffered a few years ago and the one that Rose suffered in the 2012 NBA Playoffs?! It sure sounds like it. Photo Credit: Uptown

Mazin Elsadig The Name-Drop: "People like Mazin who was a best friend to me/Start to become a distant memory," on "Wu-Tang Forever" How Random Is It? It's random in that you know Mazin was hyped to hear his former friend shout him out. He was an actor on Degrassi: The Next Generation from 2006 through 2008, but he hasn't done much work since then. So the fact that he used to be BFFs with Drake is now a career-defining moment. Photo Credit: IMDB

Ol' Dirty Bastard The Name-Drop: "You owe me, you owe me/Bitch, you better have my money when I come for that shit like ODB," on "Worst Behavior" How Random Is It? Sort of random. We would have expected Drake to use this name-drop on his song, "Wu-Tang Forever," earlier on in the album. But he chose to save it for a verse that appeared two songs later on Nothing Was the Same. Drake really loves the Wu, huh? Photo Credit: The Boombox

Dwight Howard The Name-Drop: "I reached the point where don't shit matter to me, n---a/I reached heights that Dwight Howard couldn't reach, n---a," on "Tuscan Leather" How Random Is It? Not all that random, considering that Drake and Dwight Howard have been spotted at parties together in the past. But didn't Jay Z compare Drizzy to Kobe Bryant recently? So Kobe can't be happy to hear Howard get a shout-out instead of him. Photo Credit: Bleacher Report

Trey Songz The Name-Drop: "Then we got to talking 'bout something we disagreed on/Then she started telling me how I'll never be as big as Trey Songz," on "From Time" How Random Is It? Very random in that Drake sort of threw a shot at his friend Trey Songz on the track. The two have worked together on several occasions in the past. But on "From Time," Drake insinuates that he's become bigger than Trey. Of course, he's right. But still, we imagine that's not what Trey wants to hear Drake rapping about. Photo Credit: Choice FM

Tatyana Ali The Name-Drop: "Listen to Cappadonna/The Fresh Prince, just had dinner with Tatyana," on "Tuscan Leather" How Random Is It? The Cappadonna reference is random in and of itself (did Drake really spend time listening to Cappadonna while preparing Nothing Was the Same?!). But so is the Tatyana Ali line. There have been rumors about these two dating in the past—and even one about them having a one-night stand earlier this year—but Tatyana has said that they didn't have any sort of romantic relationship. So maybe dinner was all that they had together. Hmmm… Photo Credit: New York Daily News

Paul Wall The Name-Drop: "Don't run for it, like H-Town in the summertime, I keep it 100/Lots of girls in my times there, word to Paul Wall, not one fronted," on "Too Much" How Random Is It? Very! Then again, Drake did manage to work a Mike Jones reference into the same verse that this line appeared on ("Talking to her like, 'Back then, they didn't want me,' I'm blessed now") so maybe we shouldn't be all that surprised about Drake showing love to some of H-Town's finest. Irv Gotti The Name-Drop: "Tables turn, bridges burn, you live and learn/With the ink, I could murder, word to my nigga Irv," on "Pound Cake/Paris Morton Music 2" How Random Is It? The former Murder Inc. boss was supposed to start managing Drake late last year after teaming up with Lyor Cohen. But we're not sure if that ever happened. So that makes this name-drop a pretty random one, unless we missed the memo and these two are actually doing some work behind-the-scenes together. Photo Credit: Al Lindstrom

Dan Marino The Name-Drop: "After hours of Il Mulino or Sotto Sotto, just talking women and vino/The contract like '91 Dan Marino," on "Pound Cake/Paris Morton Music 2" How Random Is It? What makes this random is that while Marino did sign a huge contract with the Miami Dolphins in 1991, the five-year deal that he signed was worth "only" $23 million. That's nothing in today's NFL. Drake should have referenced, like, Joe Flacco or Matt Ryan. Those guys are the ones getting paid these days. Photo Credit: KTGR
