20 EDM Love & Heartbreak Songs for Valentine's Day

February 12, 2013 - 7:30 pm by VIBE

The overabundance of Valentine’s Day commercials is borderline nauseating. Whether you’re an advocate of Cupid or don’t recognize the holiday at all, most agree that love is a powerful force. Can you already taste all of the candy shaped hearts you will not receive? Do you sense that he will finally “put a ring on it?” Dance music is not only made for the dancefloors and headphones. VIBE has compiled a list of 20 love songs produced by dance music artists that highlight the good, the bad, and the ugly when it comes to matters of the heart. -->

compiled by heartbeat stoppahs, Gabrielle Pharms and Bianca Mukhi

“Cinema” - Benny Benassi x Gary Go “You are a cinema, I could watch you forever/Action, thriller, I could watch you forever/You are a cinema, a Hollywood treasure/Love you just the way you are.” We are still trying to decide if the chorus is either creepy or endearing. The entire song is genuine and quite romantic. [videoembed size="full_width" alignment="center"][/videoembed]

“Cry Me A River” – Borgore “Now you say you're lonely/You cried the long night through/Well you can cry me a river/Cry me a river/I cried a river over you.” Initially, the serene vocals make your heart melt in despair. You might even ask yourself, “Why did she leave me?” Then, BOOM! Robust and aggressive dubstep wobbles and Borgore’s resentful lyrics cheer you up. The emotion behind the track is bittersweet. Alas, it’s a little more bitter than sweet. This is one of the best break-up songs. Ever. [videoembed size="full_width" alignment="center"][/videoembed]

“Heartbreaker” – Steve Aoki x Lovefoxxx “In the corner of my eye/I can see you looking fine and dandy/I know you're playing it cool/You can see I'm not a fool/I might be.” Don’t you just hate it when you know that special someone is being distant and withholding emotions? Yeah, Aoki and Cansei de Ser Sexy’s frontwoman, Lovefoxxx, also share your sentiments. [videoembed size="full_width" alignment="center"][/videoembed]

“Clarity” – Zedd x Foxes “If our love is tragedy, why are you my remedy? /If our love’s insanity, why are you my clarity?” You can’t stand to be with her, but you can’t stand to be without her. Just like this song, the love you have for your significant other outweighs the trials. [videoembed size="full_width" alignment="center"][/videoembed]

“Feel So Close” – Calvin Harris “I feel so close to you right now/It's a force field/I wear my heart upon my sleeve, like a big deal/Your love pours down on me, surrounds me like a waterfall/And there's no stopping us right now/I feel so close to you right now.” There’s nothing like that honeymoon part of a relationship. The combination of piano, punchy kickdrums and heartfelt lyrics makes this the perfect date night track. [videoembed size="full_width" alignment="center"][/videoembed]

“Something About Us” – Daft Punk “I need you more than anything in my life/I want you more than anything in my life/I'll miss you more than anyone in my life/I love you more than anyone in my life.” How could you not incorporate this into your wedding reception playlist? These lyrics behoove you to do so. [videoembed size="full_width" alignment="center"][/videoembed]

“One Trick Pony” – deadmau5 “Pump the brakes, you're a red flag, red light/Holdin' up for stop signs, I'll never be sloppy seconds/Go ahead, take them back, your one, two, three minutes/All you do is take, take, takin' off the little.” Well, at least the electro house synths will give you a smile. This is the ideal track for all of you guys and dolls that are fed up with the emotional games. You’re given the permission to say “good riddance.”

“Internet Friends” – Knife Party “Come now, surely we can be friends/I know so much about you/I love you/Look at everything I've done for you/You'd be nothing without me…You blocked me on Facebook/And now you’re going to die.” Please, please, please, don’t be one of these people. If you were dumped, take steps to move on or you will run the risk of sounding like the angst drenched lyrics of this song.

21

“My World” – Noisia x Giovanca “This world means nothing without you/And even though I carry on/My love for you is far from gone/There’s something missing in my world.” Another downside of a break-up is the empty feeling that a piece of your heart is missing.

21

“Iron Heart” – Netsky Sometimes you don’t need lyrics to express your feelings. “Iron Heart” is a blend of classic DnB and dramatic synths that convey the feelings of romantic optimism. [videoembed size="full_width" alignment="center"][/videoembed]
12
21

“Crush” – Paul van Dyk x Second Sun “I know you want me/Can't run away, can't run away from me /I'll navigate the seven seas just to find you /Can't hide away, can't hide away from me/I'll be a shadow when the sun don't shine /I'll be a fly on the wall, your wrecking ball, your wakeup call on a sleepless night.” Use that assertive attitude to get that guy! Throw the rules of He’s Just Not That Into You out of the window. Through ethereal trance melody and vocals, van Dyk is encouraging your confidence. [videoembed size="full_width" alignment="center"][/videoembed]

21

“I Love It” – Icona Pop x Charli XCX “You're on a different road, I'm in the milky way/You want me down on earth, but I am up in space/You're so damn hard to please, we gotta kill this switch/You're from the ‘70s, but I'm a ‘90s bitch.” These girls are fairly new to the dance music scene, yet they have managed to create an anthem. Girls the world over are ditching their deadweight men, burning bras, and flipping tables. Perhaps not that extreme, but it is motivating enough to at least validate your decision to leave. [videoembed size="full_width" alignment="center"][/videoembed]
14
21

“Promises” – Nero (Skrillex Remix) “You got me so wild/How can I ever deny? /You got me so high, so high I cannot feel the fire/And you keep telling me, telling me that you'll be sweet/And you'll never want to leave my side/As long as I don't break these...promises.” Lying to yourself about how you feel is as futile as empty promises. Enjoy the “high” feeling of being in lust or love. Plus, Skrillex just won a Grammy for this track, so maybe someone will win your heart dancing to it.

“I’m In Love” – Audio Bullys “I've only known you for a week but it feels like years/Love the way you talk love the way you stare/Love your blue eyes and your dark soft hair and you can't compare to those others/Make me leave my brothers in the bars in the clubs (you still know)/I'm staying in now (you still know). Ladies, if your bf is ditching a night out with the guys, he’s a keeper. This song also highlights the ability to experience love at first sight. On a side note, we could really use an Audio Bullys resurrection. [videoembed size="full_width" alignment="center"][/videoembed]

“Making Days Longer” – RJD2 “It's nice to hear you say "hello"/And “how are things with you? I love you/But very soon it's time to go/An office job to do, I'm up here writing songs for you /It's nice hear your voice again/I've waited all day long, even wrote a song for you/It's strange the way you make me feel, with just a word or two/I'd like to do the same for you.” Admit it – you smile or feel giddy inside when you get a “good morning” text or receive a random phone call from the person you adore. This experimental electronic track captures the essence of that feeling. [videoembed size="full_width" alignment="center"][/videoembed]

21

“Language” – Porter Robinson Give me release / Let the waves of time and space surround me/Cause I need room to breathe / Let me float back to the place you found me / I'll be okay If you’re going through a break-up, the title of this song is more than apt, because it wholly embodies the feelings of all of the things that are left unsaid when you split - but amicably, if you happen to be so lucky. There aren’t many lyrics, but the music does plenty of talking because we know you can’t always say what you need to. It’s fine, you’ll be okay. [videoembed size="full_width" alignment="center"][/videoembed]

Heartbreaker – MSTRKRFT x John Legend (Wolfgang Gartner Remix) You're in my mind/ You're in my heart/ I wish I knew right from the start/ All my friends said you break my heart/ A heartbreaker right from the start We’ve all fallen for heartbreakers, but it’s okay, it was probably worth it, especially if they were anything like John Legend’s melt-in-your-arms voice. This song just shows that even sexy people get hurt, and some never forget, but that you can still dance the pain away and show ‘em what they’re missing. [videoembed size="full_width" alignment="center"][/videoembed]

21

“I Could Be The One” – Avicii x Nicky Romero When you need a way to beat the pressure down / When you need to find a way to breathe / I could be the one to make you feel that way, I could be the one to set you free The intro plays childishly like The Who’s classic, “Baba O’Reilly”, but isn’t that how you feel when you fall in love with a cutie too? This tune is dainty and excitable just like you were as a teen with a big old crush. Now that you’re a little older, you know what you like and how you like it so play to your strengths and reel ‘em in. [videoembed size="full_width" alignment="center"][/videoembed]

“I Wanna Go” – Britney Spears (Dark Intensity Remix) On the other hand, some of us are dateless this Valentine’s day, and if your free spirit directs you towards the dance floor to find love then this song is a perfect pump-up jam. Even though Britney shakes it to a dance tune harder than most pop stars, this remix gives it that extra ‘oomph’ for a spot on this list. Ego – and bust – boosts aside, the lyrics are about showing the side of you that knows how to break the rules. If you’re not one for silly games, then get out there and rock the f*** out to your own beat. [videoembed size="full_width" alignment="center"][/videoembed]

21

“Dirty Dancer” – Oh My! (Alvin Risk Remix) We can’t forget the anti-Valentine’s crew, and this hard-hitting remix is just what the doctor ordered for a case of an overtly romanticized Hallmark day in February. This year the big day falls on a Thursday, which means it’s late enough in the week to go out and do the damn thing, so why not smash it with this remix from OWSLA protégé, Alvin Risk? Whether you are looking or not, you might just find yourself that perfect dirty dancer to take home. [videoembed size="full_width" alignment="center"][/videoembed]
