2013 Summer Preview: The 15 Most Anticipated Movies

May 20, 2013 - 4:57 pm by K. Clark

Ready for the re-ups? Iron Man 3has raked in millions worldwide and domestically, kicking off the summer blockbuster season. And there's more where that came from because just like summers past, sequels and reboots make up the majority of the most anticipated projects. Case in point: Director J.J. Abrams' Star Trek Into Darkness, in theaters now.

Although summer doesn't kick off until June 21, that's never stopped Hollywood from delivering their big dogs early. As Memorial Day approaches, check out the most anticipated summer films of 2013.

Fast and Furious 6, May 24

This may be the ride that never ends, given that Vin Diesel recently announced that Fast and Furious 7 will be accompanied by a world tour. But our current reality finds the original gang reuniting to save their hinds, as one character who looked pretty dead the last picture returns in a sinister way.

The Hangover Part III, May 24

The Wolf Pack returns for their supposed final installment of debauchery and mayhem in The Hangover Part III. Bradley Cooper, Zach Galifianakis and Ed Helms all head back to Sin City (see: Las Vegas) where they bump into Heather Graham's streetwalker with a soul and Mr. Chow (Ken Jeong, likely making some kind of epically deranged cameo).

After Earth, May 31

The family Smith takes a chance on M. Night Shymalan in the sci-fi thriller, After Earth. Centuries after humans emigrated from Earth to a new planet, General Cypher Raige and his son crash land in mankind's unruly former home. The pairing of real-life father and son could possibly see the torch (and box office crown) handed to the young Simba, Jaden Smith.

The Internship, June 7

Since Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson first crashed our celebrated ceremonies, they entrenched themselves in our cinematic consciousness. In The Internship, the dynamic duo of dysfunction return, playing the motormouth and the straight man, respectively, in another fish-out-of-water scenario. Despite their lack of tech prowess, Vaughn and Wilson nab internships at Google, making this film one to watch if only to see it trend.

This Is the End, June 12

Seth Rogen, James Franco and Craig Robinson are a part of a collective family, appearing in many films together alongside Jay Baruchel and Michael Cera. This Is The End finds members of the cast playing themselves while watching the City of Angels meet its end. Using enough gumption that a stoner can muster, writers Rogen and Evan Goldberg will keep one liners flying across the screen, right next to the debris.

Man of Steel, June 14

It seems like it was just yesterday that Superman was returning to the big screen after a hiatus starring Brandon Routh as Krypton's most famous face. But that was eons ago, which is long enough (in Internet-time) to warrant another origin story, this time with rugged Tudors star Henry Cavill donning the 'S' insignia. In addition to Russell Crowe and Amy Fields, the ensemble cast also includes Diane Lane, Kevin Costner and the epically vicious Michael Shannon as General Zod.

World War Z, June 21

You thought the zombie apocalypse was over when The Walking Dead went off the air? Think again. Seven years after author Max Brook's post-apocalyptic thriller, director Marc Forster is adapting the novel for cinematic consumption. Brad Pitt plays a United Nations worker who fights to save humanity, his family and more—if he can only figure out how to stop the proliferation of the undead.

White House Down, June 28

Sure, Olympus Has Fallen, but whose to say that Channing Tatum shouldn't have a crack at saving the day? The Magic Mike stars in the second coming of Die Hard on an epic scale alongside Jamie Foxx, who plays the President of the United States. Director Roland Emmerich (2012, The Day After Tomorrow, Independence Day) brings his talents back to Washington, D.C., so you can expect some incredible disaster / action scenes when this film hits theaters.

The Heat, June 28

Bridesmaids director Paul Feig pairs the comedic stylings of Sandra Bullock (no stranger to wearing funny outfits) with Melissa McCarthy. The pair play an FBI agent (Bullock) and a disheveled Boston police officer forced to work together to stop a big drug case from falling apart.

The Lone Ranger, July 3

Gore Verbinski (director, Pirates of the Caribbean) finally got his reboot of The Lone Ranger out of the stables after numerous setbacks, in-house fights and budget concerns. Cinephiles will be able to add another intriguing character to their Johnny Depp collection. The mutative method actor joins The Social Network's Armie Hammer as the masked ex-Texas Ranger's sidekick, Tonto. Hammer stars as the title character in what will be a wild, wild ride at the box office.

Pacific Rim, July 12

Ever wanted to be a Gundam fighter? Heck, if you ever wanted to do anything with a giant mech robot then this movie is for you! After mankind is forced to build technology to defend the Earth after massive monsters threaten all of humanity, it's up to Charlie Hunnam and Idris Elba to save the day. Pan's Labyrinth director Guillermo del Toro brought about mood and tonality with the special effects in this big-budget action that looks to have quite the buzz around it.

Girl Most Likely, July 19

Kristen Wiig has an exceptional skill to blend hard times with gut-busting laughs. In Girl Most Likely, the former Saturday Night Live star plays a failed playwright who hits rock bottom when she's forced to move in with her mother and younger brother. Darren Criss joins in on this fun that's sure to have just the right recipe of yuks and heartstrings.

Fruitvale Station, July 16

Ryan Coogler is buzzing with the "Osk" sound after his name is mentioned in circles. We'll let you sound that one out, as the director's promising first feature has been racking up awards at Sundance. Fruitvale Station is an Audience Award winner, and recounts the events that led to East Bay-native Oscar Grant (played wonderfully by Michael B. Jordan) losing his life at the hands of a police officer.

Elysium, Aug. 9

This futuristic sci-fi film finds Matt Damon playing a man embarking on a dangerous mission, while the wealthy live on a state-of-the-art space station. With the poor stuck on Earth with no hope of gaining access to the good times above, Damon's character is the only one who can bring these two groups together. This is the second feature from writer-director Neill Blomkamp (District 9), and it looks like his artfully inserted political undertones make their return just in time for the summer.

The World's End, Aug. 23

The trio behind Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz are bringing their show to a final curtain call. For their last hoorah, Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, alongside Eddie Marsan, Paddy Considine and The Hobbit's Martin Freeman team up for this black comedy about a group of hard-partying friends that may be mankind's last hope.
